Your roofing permit comes from the city or county that covers your address. No roofer and no web page can decide that question for you. This guide sends you to the official permit source for your property.

We wrote it for property owners across Santa Monica and the Westside. Each row names the permit authority, its current page, and our check date.

This guide comes from our roofing team at Santa Monica Roofing Contractors.

Who issues a roofing permit

Two paths cover most of the places we serve in Los Angeles County. A parcel inside city limits answers to that city government. A parcel outside every city answers to the county.

Santa Monica runs its own Permit Services Center for building work. The City also posts how its plan review process works. Culver City, Beverly Hills, and Inglewood each run their own building division.

Marina del Rey, Topanga, and Ladera Heights sit outside city limits. Los Angeles County Public Works handles the permit for that land, and its system goes by the name EPIC-LA.

Check the jurisdiction before you file anything with a city office. A mailing address can carry a city name while the land sits outside that city.

Official permit pages by place

The table below lists each place we serve, along with its permit authority. Open the official page for your area, then follow the process it describes.

Some cities speak to roof work directly on their permit pages. Beverly Hills posts a roofing page, and the Culver City application page names re-roofs. The Lawndale permit center page says roof repairs and alterations require permits.

How we built this list

We took one row per place from the official page itself. Each row holds the authority, the link, our check date, and a caveat.

We do not print fees, wait times, or the odds of approval. Official pages change, so the check date marks the limit of our review.

This list is not legal advice, and it is not a permit decision. It points you to the office with power over your roof.

Our role after you find your permit office

Once you open the correct official page above, we can pull the permit for that job. Our team handles that step on repair, replacement, and installation work.

We never promise approval, a fee, or a date. Those calls belong to the city or county that reviews the work.

See our roof installation page for supplied plans and new builds. Roof replacement covers a full tear off, and roof repair covers leaks and small fixes. Our home page shows the rest of our roofing work across the city.

Common questions about roofing permits

Do I need a permit to reroof my house in California?
That answer belongs to the city or county with authority over your property. Open the official page for your area and follow what it asks. We do not decide that from a web page.
How do I find the right permit office for my address?
First check whether your parcel sits inside city limits or in unincorporated Los Angeles County. City parcels use that city building division. Unincorporated parcels use Los Angeles County Public Works and its EPIC-LA system.
Can you pull the roofing permit for my roof work?
Yes. We help owners pull the roofing permit on jobs we handle. We cannot promise approval, cost, or timing.
